During the 1800s, Angostura Bitters were the go-to remedy for seasickness.
However, as the name suggests, it was not popular as it is so bitter.
It is widely thought that pink gin is the creation by the Royal Navy by adding gin to Angostura Bitters to make it more palatable, particularly Plymouth gin, as it is sweeter.
The Royal Navy then brought the idea of pink gin to the bars in England.
Gin was becoming increasingly popular by the 1870s, and many of the finer establishments in England were serving pink gins.
A typical garnish is a lemon slice, as the citrus essential oils subtly complement the flavour.
What botanicals are in pink gin?
Pink gin was not made pink by manufacturers and distillers.
Instead, it was made at home. Traditional pink gin is made using Plymouth gin with an added dash of Angostura bitters. Angostura bitters is a creation that combines several herbs, spices, and gentian (which is a kind of flower).
What makes pink gin different?
The Main Difference Between Pink and Normal Gin.
Pink gin differs from regular gin in that standard gin is distilled alcohol flavoured predominantly with juniper berries. In contrast, pink gin flavour is typically a gin flavoured or infused with red fruits such as strawberries, raspberries or rhubarb.
