Hedgehog Facts

A hedgehog is any of the spiny mammals of the subfamily Erinaceinae, in the eulipotyphlan family Erinaceidae. There are seventeen species of hedgehog in five genera found through parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa, and in New Zealand by introduction.

A group of hedgehogs is called an “array” but as they are mainly solitary creatures who only come together to mate it is not used often.

Their popularity as pets in the USA has made them illegal to own without a permit in some States as they are still classed as a wild animal. There are 17 different species of hedgehogs and none are native to America.

They have between 5000 and 7000 quills along their backs which they can raise in relation to threatening situations. These quills are not barbed or poisonous.

They rely mainly on their sense of smell and hearing to get around as their eyesight is very poor.

Their name comes from their natural habitat, garden hedgerows and the little grunting sounds they make. As they feed on destructive insects they are usually welcomed by the gardeners.

Hedgehogs can hibernate but not all do which makes them one of three mammals in the UK to do so. The others being the bat and dormouse.

Orders will be dispatched within 1 working day, same day if ordered before 8.30am, by either FedEx (to available areas Royal Mail Tracked where not) or within 1 working day by Special Delivery (or FedEx next working day Mon - Fri) if express delivery is chosen at checkout to mainland UK. Express delivery is not available for a Saturday delivery.

Any items returned must be in original condition with all tags attached within 30 days.
